Urbanization and Urban Landscapes
Urbanization and Urban Landscapes
Spencer Ferrier & Emily Villars
This group project intends to understand the numerous anthropological approaches to the study of urbanization and urban landscapes. We have concentrated our research focus into four areas relevant to our topic: historical and contemporary trends in urbanization and urban landscapes over space and time, costs and problems of urbanization on human communities and cultural diversity, interactions of urbanization and urban landscapes with the environment, and influence of signs in urban landscapes in the production of spatial and place identities. We use relevant theories in archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and semiotics to holistically analyze the ways in which urbanization and urban landscapes have affected the human cultural experience in spatial and temporal contexts. We find that urbanization and urban landscapes has numerous benefits and costs on the culture’s dwelling inside and outside of urban places.
