Anthropological Perspectives on Food Distribution and Justice

Garrett Quathamer, Katie Keck, Michael Kristoff, & Callan Van Ingen

Our project is seeking to understand how anthropologists approach the issues of food security and food justice. Our group members are going to approach the project from a couple of different perspectives; looking into the past to see how societies have handled the production and consumption of food as well as identifying contemporary problems in nutrition, both in the case of hunger and excess. The issue of hunger will be addressed from the perspective of international aid organizations. In our presentation we will look at some specific case studies to show whether or not these aid organizations may or not be helping, and what can be done about that. We will also focus on modern diet culture and its positive and negative implications. Looking at how societies handled the production and consumption of food will be examined through an archaeological bio-archaeological lens.
