BEHIND THE REPORT

This project examines the social and ecological complexity of the West Lafayette/Lafayette area. Inspired by Purdue’s Center for the Environment, in this project we aim to answer how different peoples and landscapes are part of building sustainable communities. This work was carried out for an Anthropology 327 Environment and Culture project in the spring semester 2014. Students conducted archival research at area libraries, completed semi-structured interviews, and carried out participant observation on themes relevant to research goals. The following report contains selections from the research results.

We would like to thank the staff at the Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections, Purdue University Libraries, who worked with us on research and granted permissions to use select photos in this report.  We would also like to thank the community members who participated in the interviews we conducted in the area on topics of mutual interest and concern.  We hope that this report is a step towards building sustainable futures.

Questions should be directed to Laura Zanotti (lzanotti@purdue.edu), the instructor for the course, who is an Assistant Professor in the Anthropology Department.
